Jiovanie Velazquez
Creative Director
After realizing that fashion school was not for him, Jiovanie (GeO) attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and received a degree in Computer Animation.
Immediately after graduating, he was offered a pick-of-the-litter position at Volition Inc. in August of 1998. Starting his game career as a character artist, GeO has been able to get his hands dirty in all aspects of game-art creation. For his first project, Summoner, he worked on characters/creatures, environments, effects, lighting, and interface. As the project was nearing completion, he became the point-man for all art assets, making sure that the visuals were as good as they can be and functioned properly before being considered final... essentially making him the first technical artist at Volition.
After Summoner he moved on to the Red Faction franchise. On RF and RF2 he was able to refine his skills and techniques, as well as work with some of the graphics programmers to push through some high-end rendering tricks. Officially a character artist again, he still managed to take on much more responsibility during the project cycle. Some of these additional duties included character concepts, vehicle creation, SFX, and destruction animation.
After RF2 shipped, GeO worked on several projects within Volition. First was an unannounced title that ended up forming the technological backbone of Saints Row. Then he worked on a small experimental game project that became absorbed into Saints Row's minigames. He was then promoted to Project Technical Artist on Red Faction: Guerilla, where he worked closely with the programmers to form the core technology of the game's new engine.
Six months later GeO was again promoted, this time to Studio Artist Manager, where his responsibilities included working with all the artists at the company (over 70) to improve their skills and grow their careers, hiring new employees, and other stuff far too mundane to mention here.
After being with Volition for 8 1/2 years, he finally decided it was time to break off on his own, but not alone, with two former-ex-once again-co-workers forming Blazing Lizard.
